Under the direction of Pedro
J. Salicrup, the firm's Labor and Employment Law Department has extensive
experience in private practice, government, industry and commerce. Mr.
Salicrup has devoted twenty-five years to the practice of Labor and Employment
Law.
Included among the wide range of clients we proudly represent are the
"Cooperativa de Seguros Múltiples", one of the largest
insurance companies of Puerto Rico, various saving and lending institutions,
medical institutions such as Hospital Universitario and Hospital Hermanos
Meléndez, retail and manufacturing companies such as Pinturas Sur
de Puerto Rico and service providers such as Centennial de Puerto Rico
and Teléfonos Públicos de Puerto Rico. We also counsel the
Senate and the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico; various government
agencies including the Treasury and Health Department, the second and
third largest department of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico with over
12,000 employees, and employment agencies such as Snelling Personell Services.
Our counseling services include the revision and/or preparation of contracts,
employment manuals, disciplinary rules, anti-discrimination policies,
equal employment plans required for federal contractor and other similar
services.
The Labor and Employment Department also offers startup and general legal
advice on all labor related matters such as permits for operating in Puerto
Rico, and orientations for the successful operation of a company in full
compliance with: Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Laws, Wages and
Hours, Closing Law (where applicable), Payroll Deductions, Family Medical
Leave Act, Maternity Leave, Meal Hour, Occupational, and Non-Occupational
Disability Insurance, Protection of the Disabled, Social Security for
Chauffeurs, Unemployment Compensation, Vacation and Sick Leave and Pension
and Health Plans (E.R.I.S.A. and applicable local statutes).
The Labor and Employment Department has extensive experience in managing
labor and employment related litigation for our clients. We handle litigation
in both federal and state courts in areas that include wages and hours,
fringe benefits, discrimination, sexual harassment claims, workers' compensation
and safe workplace issues, including OSHA, severance pay, meal hour claims
and others.
The Labor and Employment Department has experience with both union awareness
and collective bargaining, including advice and representation in elections,
contract negotiation, arbitrations, strikes and injunctions. We also have
expertise in mediation, conciliation and arbitration of labor and employment
disputes in union and non-union settings in order to minimize the costs
of litigation for our clients.
